Different Types of Roofing Materials

There are plenty of options available when it comes to roofing materials. Let us have a look at some of the most popular ones.

1. Asphalt

Asphalt shingles are the most popular roofing material among homeowners, as it is durable and inexpensive when compared to fiberglass or wood. One of the other benefits of asphalt shingles is that it is easy to install and come in wide variety of styles and colors. They usually last for about 20-50 years and also provide reliable waterproofing. Some of the disadvantages of using asphalt shingles are that their lifespan is shorter as compared to other roofing materials and also, they can be damaged easily during hailstorms and winds. Another disadvantage of asphalt shingles is that it cannot be used on flat roofs because it requires a slope.

2. Metal

Metal roofing is another popular type of roofing chosen by homeowners. Metal roofs require low maintenance, are light in weight and eco-friendly. They are highly resistant to extreme weather conditions and last longer than asphalt and wood. Metal roofs come in aluminum, copper, stainless steel, and zinc are relatively expensive than others.

3. Wood

Even though wood shingles are costlier than asphalt, but they offer more styles and designs, and this is what makes them a preferred option over other forms of roofing materials. Wood shingles are manufactured from pine, redwood, and cedar trees. They are eco-friendly and energy efficient and can last for 30-50 years depending on the type of wood you choose. One of the biggest disadvantages of wood shingles is that they are susceptible to rots, termites etc, which means they require ongoing maintenance. Also, they are not as easy to install, when compared to asphalt shingles.

4. Slate

If you are looking for a roofing material that is sophisticated and unique in appearance, then slate shingles are the ideal one for you. They are long lasting and come in a variety of colors and styles. Their only disadvantage is weight, installation, and cost. They are more expensive than other roofing materials and are also very heavy. It also requires a high degree of expertise to install slate roofs.

5. Fiberglass

Fiberglass shingles are usually made with a type of asphalt shingle and fiberglass. They are highly durable and strong. Their cost is lower than asphalt shingles and also lasts longer than other roofing materials. One of the biggest advantages of fiberglass is that they are fireproof.

6. Plastic

Plastic shingles, also known as composite shingles are popular as they are affordable and maintenance free, but they are not as long-lasting as other roofing materials. They are generally produced from recycled plastic materials. One of the main advantages of plastic shingles is that there are resistant to rot, fungus, insect infestation, and also provides a barrier from wind, rain, and hail.
