Speech and Language Assessment Methods to Determine Lingual Problems

A speech pathologist may be defined as a speech therapist who works for determining any language or speech problems in children. Often children suffer from speech problems, they are unable to participate in conversations, or they are unable to complete a sentence through speech. Detection of speech and language problems may not be possible at the early stages of life, but at a certain age, the child is seen to face problems of speech and language. This is where a speech pathologist enters the scene.

Treatment Methods that can Solve the Speech Problems of a Child are as follows:

  1. Glossectomy: If a child of 5 years or more is unable to use his tongue for speech or control his tongue movement to form a speech normally, then the child may be treated through conservative partial glossectomy. The treatment method is used to control the movement and management of tongue malignancy. It is beneficial in positioning the salivary glands and the teeth properly with an aim to improve the mobility including the parts of speech.

  2. Orthognathic Surgery: This surgical procedure can be possible as a part of orthodontic treatment if the child is of 14 to 16 years.  This will help in the improvement of the neck functions and movement of the head. It includes chewing, speech, and breathing, most important of all is articulation.

Speech and Language Assessment Methods include Asperger syndrome

One of the most complicated language disorders is autism. Autism is a condition in which a child is unable to understand or express himself through language. Depending upon the situation and age of the child, different speech and language assessment procedures are carried out by the specialist in neurology, psychopharmacology and speech assessment.

Aspects in future after Speech and Language Assessment

Early detection of the disease will allow specialists to work on speech problems as early as possible. This will build a better future for the child, depending upon the condition of the kid.

Few of the assessment and treatment procedures mentioned above can be helpful in treating speech and language disabilities. Apart from these, some conditions can also be treated with chemotherapy and other radiations at an early stage.

While at teenage, surgery can solve the problem to a far extent. But lingual problems due to autism will require therapies and guidance of specialists to improve the condition of speech.

Signs through which the Speech and Language Assessment are possible

  1. Expressive or receptive: Whether the child can indicate, show or express any of his or her requirements through language, crying or laughing.

  2. Speech formation: Improper formation of words, or incomplete words or sentences.

  3. Phonological awareness: If the child can listen to any sound and react immediately if the child can hear the sound structure of the word, as it is the main step to start learning to read.

  4. Hearing and Pre-literacy: A therapist may observe the capability of the child’s hearing power, and the ability to hear and learn any rhymes or poems. The proper hearing generally enables kids to learn words faster.

  5. Oromusculature: Oral Motor control and speech characteristics are used by the therapists for speech and language assessment to find out the capacity of a child’s oral motor skills. Therapists study the movement of the muscles, tongues, jaws, and lips to determine if any speech or language problem is present in the child.

Science and technology together have advanced to reduce the difficult lingual problems to a far extent. Common lingual or speech problems can be determined at an early stage by the parents themselves. Somehow, if you find your child is not able to react to any of the sounds which are known as phonological awareness or finding difficulty in understanding your mother tongue, then it is suggested to see the doctor at the earliest to avoid future problems due to speech and language.
