Top Reasons and Basics of Construction Waterproofing

Updated: May 15

There are few specific reasons for new construction waterproofing. The most important reason is to take your project forward as planned and to prevent it from sinking before it starts. You must be considerate and careful about waterproofing your new construction project to make it unaffected by water.  In every year, lots of properties got damaged due to water leakage and flood. This problem might occur frequently during a bad weather and therefore you will need an effective waterproofing system in your building.

Essential to A Successful Project

Constructing a building, waterproofing is essential for the successful completion of the project and also to ensure its optimal functionality. This will help you to protect the interior of the building from water damage to an undergoing construction.  This will also protect the building when it is exposed to the external elements. A bad weather can be harmful to the frames, foundations, wiring, insulation and floors. Proper waterproofing provides a primary cover for the building.

The wooden materials are more vulnerable to external damage caused by a bad weather and it will rot far too soon as compared to iron and steel. It will also cause mould infestation and render the entire building unfit to use and unsafe. Therefore, new construction waterproofing will ensure a strong start to your building project. It will also reduce the need for replacements and expensive repairing for continuous damages during the construction or even after it is completed.

Another Benefits Waterproofing

Apart from primary protection, waterproofing has other benefits also which can be summarized as follows:

  1. It promotes long-term sustainability and comfort. When you make the site waterproof early it will reduce moisture in the interiors of the building making it more comfortable to stay and allow further work in it.

  2. It also prevents flooding in future as no water will soak through the soil

Ultimately it becomes a money saver for a long-term as it reduces the need for repairs and replacement.

The Basics of Waterproofing

When you invest in a new construction waterproofing it will add to your business profits. There are two basic types of waterproofing materials used by the construction workers. One is the sheet membranes including polymers and elastomeric and the other is the sprays. In order to decide which to use the contractor will consider the initial cost of equipment required and the time it will take to do the work.

  1. With excellent waterproofing techniques, up-front costs can be controlled which is ideally negligible if sheet membranes are installed. Only a linoleum roller is required for this purpose that will press it firmly against the concrete wall.  An angle grinder may become handy to clean the wall while preparing it for the process and to remove any protuberances from the concrete. Other tools required include roller covers, knives, brushes and scrapers.

  2. On the other hand, sprayed-on waterproofing is costly but reasonable. You will require a cube van with a bulk tank equipped with the spray rig, nozzles and hoses. Sometimes ladders are required to get down into the excavation. Apart from that personal protective equipment are required that includes coveralls, face shields and respirators.

A contractor can easily use waterproofing membranes for new construction waterproofing but for the spray, adequate training is required. Using the membrane effectively will take just a couple of days to know about the basics it will take several months for expertise. Learning new techniques is paramount to ensure that the junctions are properly waterproofed. You can be benefited by waterproofing for the long term if it is undertaken effectively.
